Entry Level Drivers

For those who are interested in attending one of our Swift owned and operated schools we have 6 choices for you. They are located in Richmond VA, Memphis TN, San Antonio TX, Phoenix AZ, Kansas City KS, Troutdale, OR and Lewiston, ID. All 6 Academy's are 3 weeks long and are extremely competitive in price with $150 seat reservation fee and no credit check.

Tuition Reimbursement

If you went to a Swift approved school and you are responsible to repay your loan for school, Swift can help. We offer tuition reimbursement for up to $5,000 as long as you are a full time company driver for Swift.

Apprentice Program (approx. first 60 days)

Swift Transportation has an excellent advanced apprenticeship program for driving school graduates and drivers with less then 90 days of over-the-road experience.

A Driver Services representative will be your contact for any issues you may have during your first 60 days. You will meet this person during orientation and will communicate with them throughout the start of your career with Swift.

You will drive with a qualified Mentor pulling actual loads and earning student pay while learning the Swift system. Training time currently is 6 weeks with a Certified Mentor. Pay is $350 per week for the first 2 weeks, then $400 for weeks 3-4, and finally $500 for weeks 5-6.

Swift utilizes both male and female Mentors, an apprentice driver always has the option of training with the first available Mentor or waiting until a Mentor of the same gender becomes available.

Once you complete the 6 weeks of apprenticeship and pass your final road test you will get the keys to your own truck and be ready to go.

Driver (approx 61 days to 6 months)

Once you have the keys to your own truck, your pay will be set to your appropriate mileage pay as a solo driver. Mileage pay is based on Rand McNally Household Movers Guide Dispatch Miles.

After completion of the training phase a "Driver Manager" will be assigned to work with you and assist you in getting more confident in all aspects of the job. For the next 4 months you will be hauling freight and gaining the confidence and knowledge you need to be a safe, courteous and professional driver.

During this time your benefits package will kick in!!!

Mentor/Owner Operator (approx. at 6 month anniversary)

Six months from being released from your mentor, many things become available to you as a driver for Swift.

Your first raise happens.
You become eligible to become a Certified Mentor for the company and increase your earnings potential by as much as 33%, while mentoring others to become successful members of the Swift driving force.

You become eligible for the lease purchase program and become your own boss. You have met the 6-month requirement to join the 401K program. Entry dates are January 1st and July 1st of each year.

Around this time Swifts dedicated fleets will be looking for you to Drive in their fleet. Only driver who exhibit professional skills and attitude are promoted to these positions. 1 Year Anniversary (from being released from your mentor)

Your second Raise goes into effect.
You have earned a 1 week paid Vacation ($400) You are enjoying all of the benefits that Swift has to offer.

Career Path Experienced Driver

Experienced Driver (6 months or more recent driving experience)

Pay for Experience

Swift Transportation pays up to 10 years of verifiable experience. Each driver's level must be evaluated as it relates to Swift's own operation, and pay level is determined only after such evaluation. Swifts Pay scale. Mileage pay is based on Rand McNally Household Movers Guide Dispatch Miles.

Dedicated Fleets

Most of Swifts dedicated fleets are looking for people with a minimum of 6 months of experience in the industry. Dedicated freight for specific customer gives the driver a more regular schedule, typically getting a person home more often, or keeping them in a close region. Swift continues to search for more dedicated freight from its current customers as well as new customers.

Driver Services

Qualify for Mentor Status

If you have at least 12 months recent verifiable tractor-trailer experience and you have worked for Swift for a minimum of 30 days you may qualify to become one of our Certified Mentors. You must have the desire and attitude of a mentor. Mentors earn approx 35% more wages than the regular fleet.

Benefits Begin

For experienced drivers, the date of eligibility is the first of the calendar month following 30 days of continuous full-time employment from their hire date. The employee must be employed on the Entry Date for benefits to go into effect. Click here for more info.

Miles
As North America’s leading truckload carrier, Swift has the freight and the miles to enable our truckers to reach their financial goals.

Freight
Swift transports a variety of freight from retail to industrial materials—the majority of which is no touch and drop & hook. Our divisions include Convention Services, Container, Dedicated, Flatbed, Heavy Haul, Intermodal, Refrigerated and Dry Van.

Assessorials
Swift company drivers can earn extra pay for any of the following: detention; extra pick-up and drop-off; layovers; breakdown; loading; unloading; local work; tarp pay; wallboard; shrink wrap; hand pallet jack; driver assist load/unload; cleating, choking, bracing; rolls/cans/roll off; throwing pallets. Line haul drivers can also earn a bonus every month they drive 9,500 miles or more.

Technology
Each Swift truck features Qualcomm on-board computers. They provide wireless communications that help improve driver and dispatcher productivity, reduce fuel consumption and improve customer service. We also employ TrailerTRACS to help locate trailers and improve utilization of trailer assets. In addition to our Micro Mapping application, our planners are able to optimally assign truckloads to drivers.

Equipment
Swift uses late model Freightliner and Volvo tractors—92% of which are less than five years old.

Mentor Programs
After you’ve been a Swift driver for at least a year, you’ll have the opportunity to teach other drivers the ins and outs of professional driving. When you do, you’ll be able to earn extra income for taking on this important role.

Comfort Zones
Swift features seven Driver Comfort Zones across the country. Swift drivers can choose the region they wish to drive to suit their lifestyles.

Home Time
Swift over-the-road drivers can choose how often they want to be at home. Regional drivers are home every week. The average is one day off for every six days of driving.
